The ArgoSpine Symposium President Message

ArgoSpine 2009 was a good vintage. The different types of vines it was made from combined with careful vinification brought the distinctive touch that made once again this meeting a key event in the field of spine surgery.

The three columns (cervical, thoracic and lumbar), as well as traumatic and degenerative tumour diseases were reviewed by the expert eye of the radiologist and the surgeon. This twofold approach has been stimulating for both specialties that are too close to being really acquainted with one another. Exchanging views is therefore paramount to ensure an optimal radiological examination: What is visible? What does the surgeon look for? On this occasion, radiologists went out of the darkroom allowing us the chance to (re)discover such fascinating figures as Jean-Claude Dosch, Afshin Gangi, Randy Jinkins, Luigi Simonetti and Thomas Welk, who thrilled the audience with their passionate interest for imaging tools and for their patients. Personalities from the world of surgery like Jean Dubousset and Alan Crockard were just as remarkable. This 13th symposium has been a great moment of conviviality, warmth and mutual understanding. The tribute paid to Mario Campanacci aroused deep emotion among the participants, so poignant and powerful it was as if, for a passing moment, the audience could almost feel his presence hanging over them. The success of this meeting is undoubtedly due to the participants’ level of skills combined with a will to share and exchange views. But its success also comes from the Maison des Arts et Métiers, which is an enchanting venue. Every time we come in and out of the conference room, we face the portrait of François de La Rochefoucauld looking at us; breaks take place in the magnificent salons on the first floor exuding a unique atmosphere which leaves a lasting impression on every member of the audience. Yet, we will settle in a fresh new location on the left bank of the Seine for the next ArgoSpine symposium focusing on « new technologies in spinal surgery: gadgets or future gold standards? ». You are warmly invited to attend the 2010 edition to find out more. We hope to see you next year and wish you a successful and fulfilling surgical practice.
